Patient Education That Improves Outcomes and Adherence

This week's episode is for those practitioners that genuinely want to engage and put the patient centered care in their clinical stage. Dr Jerome Fryer, founder, and chief innovation officer at Dynamic Disc Designs Corp, talks with me about using his dynamic disc designs for patient education that improves outcomes and adherence. Dr Fryer states that when patients truly understand what's going on with them, it empowers them. And when you get a patient that's empowered about their anatomy, you're getting outcomes because they're compliant. You've built this solid connection with your patient because they understand their anatomy and what biomechanics are involved in their pain mechanism.

His models can help you become a leader in patient education, using a dynamic model which shows disorders like a disc bulging, disc herniation, fissures, the sort of thing we are typically trying to communicate to patients regarding their MRI or their CT. The unique fundamentals of the motion segment are the dynamic nucleus and dynamic annulus. There are also models with simulated Highland cartilage on the facet joint, so you can explain those micro injuries, fibrillation, or injuries to the facet joints. The dynamic models have six degrees of freedom of motion to show retrolisthesis, microlisthesis, anterior shear, lateral shear, and disc compression and decompression.

We talk about how to really focus on patient centered and specific care, paying attention to the patients biomechanical symptoms, and educating them on why they are dealing with the condition, and how you are going to help them. Using the dynamic disc models helps to educate your patients to build trust and adherence to treatment plans.

Power Quotes:

·       They always think about the fancy marketing idea or tactic or that type of stuff, but sometimes they forget the basics of patient communication, patient education, the patient experience and what you do away from your practice. (03:36) [KEVIN]

·       When patients truly understand what's going on with them, it empowers them. And when you get a patient that's empowered about their anatomy, you're getting outcomes because they're compliant. (06:37) [JEROME FRYER]

·       I just really try to make the patient front and center and really like to chase down those biomechanical symptoms. And the patient then knows that you're paying attention. You're aware of, you know, their condition and you're putting together a, a story on how you can help them specifically, if you get into templates and that sort of thing, it's not, every patient is extremely unique and you, you've got to make, make sure that they are right at the center stage and educate them along the way (18:51) [JEROME FRYER]

·       Chiropractors try to verbalize only hard things and using doctor talk and jargon that usually kind of that combination loses the patient.  (22:02) [KEVIN]
